Moving Your Pets to Your New Home
Moving to a new home can be stressful both to you and your pets. It can even be more stressful to your furry friends if you are moving from one city to another that requires more than a few hours of driving. A stressed pet will start to pant, salivate or excessively bark or howl and this can be a bit of an annoyance to everyone especially while being in a cramped space. Let’s not forget the multiple stops that you need to make for them to take a break, poo, pee, and stretch. Just imagine the long hours you will have to spend on the road with a stressed pet.
Luckily there are multiple companies out there that allow you to transport or move your properties from one place to another via air, sea, road, or rail. Among the various methods of transportation, those who wish to send something from a medium to long distance in a fast way may opt to choose the air transport mode. There are different types of air cargo services – general air cargo and special air cargo.
General cargo involves dry goods such as machinery, electronics, hardware, consumer or retail goods, textile, and many more. Special cargo, on the other hand, involves hazardous or dangerous goods, high value, and fragile items, human remains, organs, or tissue samples, and luckily for us animal lovers, this also includes live animals.
Air Travel for Pets
Freight-Calculator cares for you and your pet’s comfort. If you are relocating at a place far from your original home, the fastest way of transporting your pet would be through air cargo. However, there is a risk that you should be aware of before deciding to fly your pets. Staying in the cabin with you is the best way for your pet to fly, however, this is only possible to cats and small dogs and there are some airlines that don’t allow pets in the cabin at all. If air cargo is the only way that your pet can fly with you, here are some tips that you should follow:
- If your pet is brachycephalic or has a pushed-in face like pugs, bulldogs, and Persian cats, it is best if they are not flown at all, whether as air cargo or at the cabin, since they are very vulnerable to oxygen deprivation.
- Get a sturdy and comfortable pet crate. Let your pet become familiar with their travel carrier at least a month before your scheduled flight to minimize the factors that can contribute to their stress level.
- Make sure that you travel on the same flight as your pets. You can also try and ask the airline if you can watch your pet being loaded and unload in the cargo hold. That way you will know if they are being mishandled and you can take necessary actions if it happens.
- Notify the captain or cabin crew that your pet is in the cargo hold. Once the captain knows there is an animal on the cargo hold, the captain can take special precaution and watch for the pressure and temperature inside the cargo hold.
- Once you arrive at your destination, check your pets and take them to a veterinarian if you notice something wrong with them.
